Here is a guitar neck.

The standard guitar has 6 strings. The 6 strings are numbered from the highest string (1) to the lowest string (6).

The note names of the strings are E  A  D  G  B  E (starting with the 6th string on down).

Let’s start with the 6th string.

When this string is plucked or picked with no fingers placed on it, it is said that the string is Open. An example would be to “play an open E string.”

Now, to “play an open E string,” we have two options: we could play the E, the 6th string, or the E, the 1st string.

There are 12 notes (intervals) between an octave. An octave is the interval between one musical pitch and another with double the frequency. It is the same note but pitched one octave higher or one octave lower.

The notes on the piano are identical to the notes on the guitar. Let’s look at it on the piano first. Starting on the note E (since the guitar’s lowest note is E (the 6th string), the notes are:

Don, the graphic below is confusing. I was expecting it to show the octave like on the piano above, not just the lowest note.
