RESTS
Just as a note tells you when to play within a musical piece, a rest tells you when not to play.
That’s right, when not to play. A rest is basically what it says, rest here take a break, and don’t play anything.
As shown in the above graph, we count the beat of a rest exactly the way we count a note except we don’t play anything.

TIED NOTES
A Tie is a common symbol seen in music. A tie is an arc shaped line used to connect two notes.
A Tie connects two notes of the same pitch.
Why use ties?
When notes are tied together the second note is not played.
A pair of notes tied acts as one note with their rhythm values added together.
There are certain musical situations where the best way to show the rhythm is with a tie.
The most common situation in which ties are used is to connect notes across a bar line.
Ties make reading rhythms easier.
By using the tie symbol we are connecting the beats together. Let’s listen to the difference in the measures below.
