When you first open Pro Tools your computer screen will look like this. This is the Pro Tools default Window.
The term Window is simply saying "the visual you are looking at," not a big deal at all.
The default window is empty, there are no tracks in it. It's our job to create the musical tracks we need to convey our song.
Pro Tools has 2 main working windows:
the Edit Window
and
the Mix Window.
The Edit Window displays your tracks against a timeline. This window is ideal for editing and moving clips of audio and MIDI around to create or rearrange your song.
The Mix Window displays your tracks using a digital mixing board, ideal for mixing, changing audio levels, adding effects, and panning.
*If you have little experience with recording, this information may be quite new to you, but hang in there, it will become very clear to you as we move forward.
You can change between the 2 windows from the top menu bar by selecting Menu > Window, and then selecting either Mix or Edit.
- Notice just to the right there is the computer shortcut - CMD =.
The Command (or CMD) Key on an Apple computer is shown below.
I am using an Apple computer and the shortcut is CMD =. If you are using a Windows computer the shortcut is different, it is CTRL =. Whatever computer you are using, the shortcut will display correctly in the menu.
Take the time right now to practice both ways of switching between the 2 windows.
