Pro Tools software must be authorized to run on your computer. Authorize means the software must see a license to validate its use.
There are two ways to authorize the license:
- The iLok Cloud.
- An iLok drive.
iLok Cloud
The iLok Cloud is a service provided by the iLok company used to store licenses on iLok's servers. When you start your software, it connects to these servers using your internet connection and searches and verifies a valid software license. If it finds the license you are good to go.
If this image displays when opening Pro Tools,
it means your computer cannot connect to the iLok Cloud because of an internet connection error. The result is that you will not be able to use the software. Of course, this also means if you are in a remote place that does not have internet access like you went on a getaway to a cabin far in the woods to work, you will not be able to work. No internet, no Pro Tools.
iLok Drive
An iLok authorized drive is different. It's a USB dongle (basically a flash drive) that allows you to store the Pro Tools authorization on it. That means you can work anywhere without an internet connection.
We recommend that you purchase an iLok drive ($50) and authorize your software to it, that way if you are in the mountains or in an area where the internet connection is not stable, you still be able to work. For more information contact ilok.com or your retailer.
